The Message #Fiction

(The Prompt for this piece was: Delivering a message in an unconventional way)
She had been waiting at the station for the past two hours. The crowd had been particularly thin today, and that’s saying something considering only three trains had stoppage today. Apart from the station master, there were only a couple of hawkers.

The first two trains had already left, taking with them commuters, some to and some away from their loved ones. It was the third train she was waiting for.  Ever since he had gone to the city, this train was the only thing that could down the anxiety that had built up over the week.

She had been hysterical when he had announced that he was moving to the city to earn more, to have a better life. How much had she tried to convince him not to go, not to leave her alone here! He did not listen. He had never listened to her. She had to let him go. Last month he had tried to get her one of those new devices that you could talk into but she refused. She could not even reach home after work without help how would she take care of something so expensive. Also, he needed to save the money.

Her thoughts were broken by the sound of whistle going off in a distance. She moved to the end of the platform and waited as the train pulled in. Once the train came to a halt, she went to the last carriage and peeked behind it. Written on the back in his familiar handwriting were the words:

“I am ok maa! All is going well and I will see you soon.”

She took a sigh of relief as she turned and left for home.
