Maria Sharapova probably did not know that this statement
from her will turn a full country of 1.2 billion people against her.
All those with a twitter account took it on to themselves to show the might of India. How dare she not know the god of Cricket? It is quite funny really. She is a Russian born professional tennis player who is living in USA. Cricket is a sport which is played by 12 nations (not counting the associate nations). Neither Russia nor USA is among the 12 nations. Why should she know a player from a country to which she has no link to and from a sport that she (and more than half the world) probably does not care about.

Since yesterday when the news came of this interview, every
Sachin fan has taken to twitter to rant about how great Sachin is some going on
to suggest that Sharapova should kill herself for not knowing ‘the god’(sarcasm
intended)! Even on facebook, a lot of cricket pages are sharing pictures like this here.
What are you trying to show? The level of intolerance is heartbreaking. I say ask these people how many Russian sports personality do they know. Forget Russian, most of them will not be able to name most of the Indian sports players (not talking about Saina, Sania and the cricket team). I dare them to name even 5 football or hockey players of India.
Some will ask me, ‘Why are you speaking against
Sachin?’ Well I am not against Sachin. He was a great player who served his
nation and the game well but every Ram, Shyam and Lakhan with twitter or
facebook speaking as if they are the most learned in the world is wrong. Sharapova is also a great player who is
serving her nation and the game of tennis. Stop expecting everyone to know your
idol. It is high time for us to realize, we are not the centre of the earth. Those
who are asking who is Maria Sharapova, she won the Wimbledon at 17, what were
you doing at 17?
It was a non issue
which has been given unnecessary attention and made into a huge issue by the
media. Frankly, my dear I don’t give a damn if she know Sachin or not.
