TVF Tripling Season 2 : A Review

As the whole world goes gaga over Avengers: Endgame, I am stuck here watching YouTube, Netflix, Hotstar, GoT, IPL, and whatnot. This is not because I don’t want to see Endgame but rather because the only friend available to watch the movie with me is, well, married (self-explanatory). I have never watched a movie alone, and I don’t intend to start now. With the plan for Avengers delayed, I have taken up to books and web series (no dearth of content around). Luckily for me, TVF decided to release the second season of their web series Tripling in April (I know it was released whole 3 weeks before Endgame but I found it recently, okay?). Tripling season 1 was adorable and brilliant, so I was excited to see what they got this time. These are my thoughts on season 2 of the sibling road trip saga from TVF. (I will try to avoid giving out any spoilers but c’mon this isn’t Endgame that I can spoil for anyone. It’s been out for almost a month so most of you must have already seen it)

Synopsis: Tripling season 2 starts with Chandan, the eldest of the dysfunctional siblings on the sets of a movie which is being adapted from his now famous book on season 1. He is busy with his book tour and interviews and signings and keeps a recorder to note interesting things happening around him for his second novel. Enter Chitvan, the youngest, who we learn has a new girlfriend (complete with a kid). The brothers take a road trip to Rajasthan where Chanchal, now a local MLA and the only not-so-developed character of the three, with new marital problems thanks to Chandan’s book. She has to run away with her two brothers to find her husband on a trip that takes them across the breadth of the country.

First thoughts: The situations don’t feel very natural this time around. There are a lot of eccentric characters in their lives and many times the things happening felt a little forced. Tripling has lost the fluidity in the story compared to season 1. There are parts which are great (as we expect from TVF series), but then it cannot be said for the complete story.

Characters: Chitvan is cool as ever, and with the kid in the picture, we get to see a new dimension to his personality. Chandan has become ‘cooler’ than last time (roaming with joints in his pocket) but still has that elder brother instincts inside him. Chanchal I feel is still the most underworked character though it has been her both times providing the plot with a purpose. No dramatic high moment like the Marco Polo bit from season 1 for any of the characters but still enough for them to grow steadily.

Being a road trip genre, I must admit they did take quite the road trip starting from Rajasthan to Lucknow to Kolkata ending at Sikkim. Lucknow had interesting characters from the Prince to his wife to their pigeons. The whole Kolkata bit was significant because it built up Chitvan’s character beautifully. We see his past and the present and how he isn’t just a goofy character for the laughs but someone who cares deeply for those close to him.

Story:  Slightly below the levels established by other TVF series and even Season 1 of Tripling. Last time these characters had to find themselves and each other amidst all the shit that life was dealing out to them. The finale felt cathartic to all of us on that journey together. But this time they had a more ‘materialistic’ goal to achieve, and we know in our hearts it is just a matter of time before they succeed cause lets face it, it is not HBO producing GoT (though even they have lost some right to be compared here). Music is awesome though. I won’t mind having its songs on my playlist.

Also, I need answers from TVF (never good to have unanswered questions at the end of a series). Their mother and father were shown on the way back from vacation. What happened to them? Did they reach? Why were they even shown?

What happened to Chitvan and his new family. Are they still together? Did he marry?

But the most important question I want the answer to - how did Chitvan get his car from Mumbai to Delhi faster than the Rajdhani?

Verdict: This road trip has not run out of fuel yet, but there are some roadblocks that make it a bumpy ride.
Here is hoping TVF will be back to their best with Tripling: Season 3 (whenever it happens).

Have you seen the show? What was your reaction? Let me know below. And now my wait for Endgame resumes.

Feedback Appreciated.
